Weekly New Zealand Hotel News

  • Foreign investors keener to buy rooms than build
Weekly New Zealand Hotel News 1-- Foreign investors are buying New Zealand hotels at a record rate, but are not interested in building new accommodation. Australian, French and Asian property investors spent $278 million buying eight hotels in the past year. The trend towards buying existing hotels rather than building new ones was gaining momentum, said Mike Batchelor, executive vice-president of Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels in Brisbane. Batchelor represented the seller in the record-breaking $96 million sale of Auckland's Carlton Hotel this week. More about.....

  • Top hotel goes to Aussies for 5-star price
Weekly New Zealand Hotel News 2-- New Zealand's largest hotel has been sold for $96 million to an Australian company. Carlton Group, owned by the Li family of Hong Kong, sold the 455-room Carlton Hotel at the intersection of Mayoral Drive and Vincent St in central Auckland to ASX-listed Abacus Property Group, which bought Christchurch's Chateau on the Park this year. Abacus managing director David Bastian said the hotel had been sold with vacant possession. This means its management contract is up for sale, and groups understood to be interested in it include Sheraton, Marriott, InterContinental and Sofitel.More about.....

  • Luxury lodge at lake site
Weekly New Zealand Hotel News 3-- AN upmarket tourist lodge and chalets will be built near Queenstown in New Zealand after a lakefront site was sold to a local developer. Rod Neilsen has paid about $NZ12 million ($10.09 million) for the 38ha property adjoining the famous Walter Peak Station and Lake Wakatipu. Meanwhile, in another big New Zealand tourism sector deal, Accor Premiere Vacation Club has paid more than $NZ10 million for The Grand Mercure Puka Park on the North Island's Coromandel Coast. The property has 48 chalets and covers 10.1ha near Pauanui. It was sold by Puka Park Resort Ltd, a subsidiary of Tainui Group Holdings Ltd. It becomes the eighth Grand Mercure owned by APVC, an Australian-based timeshare company that is a joint venture between the French hotelier Accor and Melbourne-based developer Becton. • Slow net speed 'squeezes tourism'
Weekly New Zealand Hotel News 4-- New Zealand tourism is being held back by a lack of broadband internet access and smaller operators could lose out on vital bookings, a leading operator says. Speaking at the Tourism Industry Association conference in Christchurch yesterday, Henry van Asch, director of A J Hackett Bungy, said undoing Telecom's "stranglehold" on broadband could only help the industry. Companies that were not able to respond quickly to inquiries had a "high potential" for being eliminated quickly, he said. Those who responded quickly got the job and were seen as having more credibility. Replying to a question about Australian Government subsidies to rural areas, Mr van Asch said: "I'd certainly like (finance minister) Dr Cullen to give us some funds for broadband in the tourism sectors." • Guests bring along the Easter Bunny
Weekly New Zealand Hotel News 6-- Guest nights in short-term accommodation rose 4 per cent in April compared with a year earlier, mainly due to the timing of Easter, Statistics New Zealand said yesterday. Easter was in April this year and March last year. Guest nights for March and April were 2 per cent lower than for the same period in 2005.
